Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, dwelt a shepherd boy. His being was pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the breezes across the lone tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
But, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. On one such day out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plan.
Tales of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has read more been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
